Release: SPD – Myriad EP [Out now on Slime Recordings]

57076_125608067586476_262787286_oSPD (real name Will Sheppard) is a Liverpool based producer who originates from Birmingham, and has made the trip down to showcase his music several times at Listening Sessions. I personally really look forward to when Will makes it down – his sound is really solid and the atmosphere his tracks create is really something special.

His latest outing on Slime Recordings, entitled “Myriad EP”, really lives up to its name – it displays the versatility in Will’s sound, whilst maintaining a deep, soulful feel from start to finish.

The EP opens with the sublime “Jasmine Tea”, which Will shared with us way back in January. An ethereal vocal echoes around birdsong and other natural sounding atmospherics, creating sonic textures that are just too easy to lose yourself in! This is still one of my favourite tracks from Listening Sessions so far – it’s not every day you come across music with such a strong vibe.

The EP then continues along a similar vein with “Tricky” – following the same slow-motion house template as “Jasmine Tea”, trickling water sounds carry the organic warmth through into this next beat and maintain a real sense of continuity and wholeness – it’s clear that the release has been thoughtfully put together, and not just four random tunes from SPD’s hard drive.

We then take a darker turn for the final two tunes, “Nedificate” and “Badmanting”, which see SPD applying the same organic tribal feel to a more traditional dubstep template with great effect. “Nedificate”‘s techno-inspired synth riffs pave the way for relentless rolling drums, sizzling midlines and weighty bass, whilst “Badmanting” really harks back to the golden age of dubstep with haunting minimal melodies, thumping kicks and pure low-end pressure.

The EP is available now exclusively from Juno here, and you can hear more of SPD’s music here. You can also find out more about Slime Recordings here.
